What are Hydroxy Acids (AHAs and BHAs)?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) such as Lactic and Glycolic Acid are water-soluble and work on the skin's surface. The Refining Collection is formulated for evening use, applied after cleansing and before your Rejuvenating Night Crème or GelCrème. The formulations work optimally overnight, when the skin's renewal processes are most active. We recommend starting with two to three evenings per week and increasing frequency as tolerance builds.

Are Hydroxy Acids safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, when introduced gradually. RATIONALE Hydroxy Acid formulations are paired with skin-comforting ingredients to support tolerance. We recommend beginning with two evenings per week and layering with Nourishing formulations such as #6 The Rejuvenating Night Crème to maintain barrier comfort. Always pair with daily SPF, as Hydroxy Acids can increase sensitivity to solar damage. As an alternative, reach for #5 The Refining Milk Concentrate; a gentle, comforting emulsion that harnesses peptides and Microbiome Complex to support skin pH and promote visible clarity for skin that does not tolerate Hydroxy Acids very well.

Can I use Refining formulations with retinol?

Yes. The Refining Collection (Hydroxy Acids and Peptides/Microbiome Complex) and The Rejuvenating Collection (Vitamin A, Bakuchiol and DNA Repair Enzymes) work in synergy within the evening ritual to support renewed skin turnover and visible skin clarity. We recommend introducing one active at a time to assess tolerance. Layering after Nourishing formulations helps maintain comfort and barrier resilience.

How often should I use The Refining Serum?

We recommend introducing #5 The Refining Serum two to three evenings per week, gradually increasing to nightly use as tolerance builds.
